"Make His Praise Glorious" Psalm 66:2
Singing Churchwomen

Barbara Noakes, Director

Dear Ladies,

Your months of rehearsal and individual work paid off!  I so appreciate your diligence and pursuit of excellence.  Most of all, though, I was so touched by the way you ministered at Brasswell's!  That's what we are about.  I believe that Jesus said that if we did all of that practicing and singing and didn't have love, it wouldn't amount to much, didn't He?  Your love was showing.  You are amounting, and you're counting.  I so appreciate Lulyn and Rich inviting us to their lovely home for snacks, too.

At the music conference the other night, Helen Walker said, "Barbara if it hadn't been for California Singing Church Women, I would never have met all of those wonderful women!"  She was so right.  It takes a special brand of person to get in there and stick it out to sing and glorify God to the best of your ability as you have done.  I am so blessed to be a part of you.

Thanks so much to Ellen Beery and all of the others who have worked and worked and worked.  You are beautiful women, and you did a beautiful job.  You are undoubtedly the best!

Barbara

Cande, who says she is a born-and-raised Southern Baptist, sings first alto with the California Singing Church Women.  She was baptized at the age of 6 in Cupertino, California, but because of her dad’s Navy career, has been in churches from California to the East Coast and as far west as Guam.  She has been a member of First Baptist Church, Orangevale, for more than ten years and has lived in the Sacramento area for nearly fifty years.  Cande’s husband, Richard, was the “preacher’s kid’, and they have two adult children and four granddaughters.

Cande has served on California State and Associational Vacation Bible School training teams; served California Baptist University as a trustee for several years; currently serves on the Sacramento Association Executive Board; and now sings on the Worship Team at First Baptist, Orangeville.  She has been Vacation Bible School Director for a number of years and is just now kicking off a Wednesday evening children’s activity.  In addition, she is active with her church’s senior choir and fellowship group.

Having retired from a 35-year law enforcement career in Sacramento, Cande has also been a member of the Board of Directors for the International Association of Women Police (IAWP) for twelve years and continues to travel the world over for that organization’s conferences and board meetings.  Cande sang for two years with the Sacramento Symphony Chorus, now the Sacramento Choral Society.

She enjoys spending time with extended family (especially the granddaughters), traveling with Richard in the motor home, working in her flowers, card making, and scrap booking.   She is known for her infectious smile and positive attitude, as well as a lovely singing voice.

Bettye (BJ) Anthony sings first soprano with the California Singing Church Women.  She started participating many years ago and has now sung with our new group since we restarted three years ago.  She lives in Sacramento and has two married adult children and two grandsons.

Bettye was born and raised in Lake Village, Arkansas, and was saved when she was seven years old.   She’s been in a Southern Baptist church somewhere every since.  Bettye started singing in a church choir in her teens and has continued to do so until now.  She especially loves to sing in gospel trios and quartets.   At First Baptist Church Fair Oaks, she enjoys singing with the church choir and the Hallelujah Chorus.

Bettye worked for the Federal Government for 21 years.  After she retired, she became a licensed day care provider.  She works with preschoolers in church and has done so for about 35 years.   She has worked with a couple of youth groups, but says she believes that her place is with preschool age.  She dearly loves taking care of them, teaching them, loving them, and watching them grow.

Renee Beers-Schmidt sings second soprano with California Singing Church Women and is one of the newest members.  She lives in South Sacramento. Originally from Indonesia, Renee is of Dutch nationality, was educated in the Netherlands, and immigrated here with her late husband, Al, in 1956.  They had been married for 43 years, had five children and eleven grandchildren.  After Al died in 1999, Renee remarried, and that husband, Hank, died five months after they married.

Renee has an interesting and colorful history.  During the Second
World War, her dad was a prisoner of war, and she was forbidden
to go to school.  She went to a Protestant church by herself in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she came to know the Lord, sang in the children’s choir, and always played the part of the angel Gabriel in the Christmas story.  She went to the Catholic church for a while, loved the Gregorian chants, and became a cantor and a liturgical dancer.  She often led the congregational singing with her guitar.  She is always involved in some kind of music, whether it is singing or playing guitar or the Q-chord, a digital autoharp that can make over 100 instrumental sounds.  Renee sings with Sweet Adelines and ladies’ and mixed quartets.  She loves it all.  Her daughters are following in her footsteps.

Renee’s daughter, Vicentia, married in the Baptist church and had no car, so Renee drove them to church.  This made her late for her own services, so she started going to church with them.  She was eventually baptized there.

Having taught about 50 different classes in needlework, arts, and crafts in the past twenty years, Renee still has a garage full of goodies!  Besides singing, her favorite activities are sewing and thriftstore browsing.

With her wonderful background in music, sense of humor and big
brown eyes, Renee is a delightful addition to California Singing Church Women!

In the Spotlight ...

Marilyn Crabtree had sung with the California Singing Church Women on one occasion before its new beginning last year.  She sings alto with the group and serves as Secretary-Treasurer.

Born and raised in Ventura, California, Marilyn was saved on Christmas night when she was nine years old.  She began singing in church choir as a teenager and played piano for the children’s and the youth departments.  She attended California Baptist College (now CBU), took one year of organ, sang in the choir and in Les Chanteuses under the direction of Helen Walker.  It was there that she met Walt. They married in the summer of their junior year and both graduated in 1962. They have three children, ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Marilyn served as church secretary for Trinity So. Baptist Church, Fresno for 23 years.  Her husband served several churches in California in music and education and worked with the CSBC.  Marilyn was a state-approved preschool worker and taught preschoolers in Sunday School for 36 years.

She is actively involved in CBU Alumni Association. She has special memories of the missionaries her parents invited to their home when she was a child, and continues to have a deep passion for missions.  She serves as chairman of Warren-Brown Mission House, a missionary residence in Pioneer for missionaries on stateside assignment.  She corresponds regularly with missionaries and schedules them at the mission house.

Walt and Marilyn retired in 1997 and moved to a mountain home in Pioneer.  They are members of Sierra Baptist Church, where Marilyn serves as Missions Offering Emphasis Leader and organist.   The Crabtrees love traveling in their motorhome and serve with California Campers on Mission.

In the Spotlight ...

Barbara Fox accompanies for the California Singing Church Women—particularly those who rehearse in the northern part of the state.  She’s the greatest!

Barbara was born in Hollywood, California and attended Hollywood High School.  She also attended LeConte Jr. High, where she says she developed most of her accompanying skills while playing for Mae Nightingale and her Troubadors.  She was the only girl amid 50-60 boys. Barbara graduated from UCLA with a major in physical education and a minor in music.

While attending the Hollywood Bowl, Barbara met her husband, Tom.  Their mutual love for great music and performers drew them together, beside the fact that Tom needed an accompanist!  Barbara feels that God’s sense of humor was revealed in the fact that he put UCLA and USC grads together.  In addition, she was a P.E. major, and Tom flunked P.E. in college ( because as a college freshman, he forgot to drop a P.E. class!).

Barbara and Tom have been involved in the church music ministry for many years, having served churches in Pasadena, LaCrescenta, Los Gatos, and Sacramento.  Tom was bi-vocational, teaching public school music, as well as being involved in the music ministry.

The Foxes have had many rich life experiences, including this one that Barb relates: “We were living in Northern California when our 18 month old daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, and we had to make a quick move to Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles.  Doctors in Northern California didn’t know how to care for a baby that young.  We hardly had time to say goodbye to Yreka friends, and Tom had to leave his teaching position.  Well, a music teacher “decided” to retire 8 weeks into the fall semester.  Tom stepped right into that position and was even given the authority to interview and hire his replacement.  Unusual and miraculous!”

Tom’s mother was Dale Evans, and the family celebrates that heritage.  Their three daughters sing the music that Roy Rogers and Dale Evans made popular.  Is it any wonder that Barbara sometimes rides her stick horse, Trigger, into rehearsal?
